Veteran broadcaster Regis Philbin says he's retiring from his weekday talk show. His decision to leave 'Live!' leaves viewers wondering who can take his place. Regis, 79, made the announcement at the start of Tuesday morning's "Live With Regis and Kelly," which he has hosted for a quarter-century, most recently sharing hosting duties with Kelly Ripa. Philbin said he would be stepping down from the show around the end of the summer, but he didn't specify a departure date.
We wonder why Regis has chosen this particular year to retire. Was he getting pressure from his wife Joy? Or perhaps Disney studios, who produce the show, have given him the push. He has been having a few memory lapses for the past few years when it comes to names and places. He's such a beloved icon, a few memory gaps shouldn't matter. As long as Regis wants to work, he should. He's charming, entertaining and has a lively wit. He has always known how at laugh at himself. He is genuinely interested in people and can make you feel relaxed like you're with an old friend, which, indeed, he is to most of us who grew up watching him on one show or another. Sad to see you go Rege.
