Senator Mary Landrieu

Louisiana is making strides in education and must continue to do so to ensure economic recovery and the future of job creators such as Barksdale Air Force Base , U.S. Senator Mary Landieu told the times leadership in an editorial conference Thursday .
The visit by Landieu , New Orleans Democrat and the state's senior solon , was part of a visit to Shreveport on Thursday that included a meet and greet with young professionals and an appearance as keynote speaker at David Raines Community Health Center an annual meeting and Health Career Scholarship banquet , "Celebrating 20 years of Service," at the Shreveport Convention Center .
Today (Friday 24th , August) , she will help open Google's "Get Your Business Online" workshop with Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel at the Acadiana city's Louisiana Immersive Technologies Center .
Technology and the education needed to sustain and moviate a science , techology , electronics and math-oriented work force were key in topics Landrieu addressed with The Times Publisher Don Bailey , Executive Editor Jeff Benson in a session that lasted more than an hour .
There has been some successes she said , citing the local entity Barksdale Forward , which has served as a model for similar support groups near Fort Polk and at Belle Chasse .
She also noted the mixed success of education in reform state , beginning with the transformation of New Orleans education after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 . "We lost 100 out of 146 schools , physically ," she said , noting that her city's school system "emerged, basically , as an all-charter model."
However , she said the education reform recently enacted in Louisiana took the wrong path .
She said she initially supported Gov . Bobby Jinda's education reform plans , "but I dividrd with him over his seeming focus on moving so quickly and so boadly and without a lot of thought and attention to private vouched , taking not only state money out of the school system , but mandating that local money come out of the MFP formula to go to private schools with very little accountability and regulation ." Gov. Bobby Jindel's move is not going well with North Louisiana's school boards , especially Bossier and Caddo parishes boards .
