Mel Gibson's "the Beaver" which also stars and was directed by Jodie Foster got a lot of publicity ... thanks (unintentionally) to Gibson's taped rants ... but the movie still tanked at the box office.
The film opened with a limited release in 22 theaters in the country's biggest markets , and only earned $ 104,000.
To put that in perspective , that's an average of $ 4,745 per screen , though the studio had hoped for close to four times that amount per screen.
While the film did far better in L.A. and New York , it totally bombed in places like Boston , Chicago and Washington, D.C.
The film opens nationwide on May 20 .
