The actor-comedian mocks gun enthusiasts by spoofing the late Charlton Heston (an NRA spokesperson) and playing a country singer named Lonesome Earl whose song contains some pretty biting lyrics about gun culture.
Abraham Lincoln, Gandhi, John Lemon, Sam Elliott, and others appear in the "Hee-Haw" send-up.
Carrey explained his intentions in a statement, saying, "I find the gun problem frustrating and ‘Cold Dead Hand’ is my fun little way of expressing that frustration."
He was slightly less polite on Twitter.
"‘Cold Dead Hand’ is abt u heartless motherf%ckers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids.Sorry if you’re offended by the word safety!" he wrote as part of a longer anti-gun tirade.
