TORONTO - Hollywood legend Robert De Niro says his directing days are nearly done.
Although best known as an actor, De Niro directed "A Bronx Tale," which was released in 1993, and more recently "The Good Shepherd," starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie. De Niro, who just turned 67, says he only sees himself directing another three movies "at the most." He says he'd like to direct a sequel to "The Good Shepherd" and maybe even a third film in the series.
De Niro, who has starred in dozens of movies over more than 40 years, admitted he's built up a bit of an intimidating reputation that can scare other actors. But he said it usually doesn't take long for others on set to get over it. "When you're with people and you're working with them that goes away pretty fast, you've got to work together," said De Niro, adding he tries to put others at ease by asking them to call him Bob.
"It goes away, it has to, and if anything my job is to help people if they are really nervous."
De Niro was speaking at a news conference for "Stone," which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. The prison drama also stars Edward Norton, who plays a criminal nearing release on parole. Before he gets out, he must convince De Niro's character — who has a troubled past of his own — that he's fully rehabilitated. "Stone" will be released in theatres on Oct. 15.
Just a word, Bob, about those two sequels to the Good Shepherd. It was a pretty good film but I don't think I'm interested in watching two more. Maybe not even one more. By all means keep looking for a good story but maybe give us something new and fresh.
